Mani Ratnam's illness gives Abhi-Ash time together

If you wanted to greet the first couple of Bollywood- Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan - on their wedding anniversary, you may be disappointed. Sources confirm that Ash-Abhi won’t be in town on April 20 when they celebrate their second wedding anniversary. The family, including Amitabh and Jaya, are debating whether the couple should go to Europe or the United States.

Europe, especially Italy, is Jaya Bachchan’s favourite holiday destination. She even has a villa in Florence where she stays during her visits. A source close to the family reveals, “Jaya is suggesting they fly to Florence and spend the day there, while Amitabh is coming up with the idea of a US trip. They haven’t yet taken the final call but it will be one of the two destinations.”

Both Abhishek and Aishwarya have been working super hard for Mani Ratnam’s film Raavan for the past few months. Now that Mani was hospitilised for exhaustion, they have the opportunity to take a break while he recuperates. “This will be the first time in a very long time that they will get to take a vacation. They haven’t been on a holiday ever since their marriage,” says the source.

Last year, the couple didn’t celebrate their one year anniversary due to the demise of Abhishek’s grandmother Teji Bachchan. The source says, “They won’t be at Jalsa this year, there is definitely a mini vacation being planned.”

Abhi Ash To Celebrate Anniversary in Europe

abhiash1

Abhishek and Aishwarya are finally going to take a breather from their tight schedules of Raavana a film directed by Mani Ratnam. Mani got admitted into hospital after he suffered from chest pains during the shoot.

Doctors have advised him rest for the next week and Aishwarya and Abhishek get time to sneak off to Europe to celebrate their second wedding anniversary.

A source reported, “Both Ash and Abhi have been very concerned about Ratnam’s health and they have been in constant touch with the director in the last few days. But now that the doctors have said that Ratnam’s health is in no serious danger and he needs time to recover, Ash and Abhi too want to take a small break. They have been going through hectic schedules in the last few months.

Reports say the couple wants to go on a brief holiday for their second wedding anniversary. They might go to Europe or the US.

Last year, they could not celebrate their wedding anniversary because the family was mourning Teji Bachchan’s death.”

We hope this year they make up for the last one… and have a happy wedding anniversary celebration.

SRK-Ash will work together

After a souring of relations between the two stars, things have reportedly become better.

While our much-loved Ash was always meant to play the female lead role, Mani Ratnam wanted to cast SRK as his Ram in Raavan.

Owing to the fight between Salman Khan and SRK, relations between Ash and King Khan had soured. Keeping this in mind, Mani Ratnam approached Ash and confessed to her his original choice for Ram. She politely agreed to star opposite him.

However, while SRK agreed to play the part, he realized his dates were taken for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Oh at least fans can be assured of seeing the duo sharing screen space again!

Abhi-Ash To Celebrate 2nd Wedding

0143040_aish_abhi14

This April 20th it will be two years from the time Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai said ‘I do’ to each other. Just as we expect the couple will take some time off their busy schedules and celebrate their 2nd wedding anniversary with their family. We hear that the couple has just no time for celebration.

Abhishek and Aishwarya are working in Mani Ratnam’s forthcoming bilingual Ravana, which is a modern day adaptation of the epic Ramayan.

A source reported, “The couple had planned a quiet day with a small get-together with parents Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan . But little did they know that their Mani Sir (read Mani Ratnam ) had other plans chalked out for the day.

Ratnam, reportedly, was in no mood to slacken the ongoing shooting schedule of his Ravana in the south and had planned a shoot for April 20 for both Ash and Abhi. As the schedule can’t be delayed, the husband-wife duo cordially agreed to work on their second wedding anniversary.

So there’s going to be no celebration, no family get-together for Ash and Abhi as they mark two years of their life has husband and wife. However, the big consolation is that they would be together on the special day.”

Sad! Wish they could makeup for that by having a quiet romantic dinner together

How fair is Bollywood with the Fairer sex?

It is often observed that Bollywood always associates the women folk to beauty, charisma and style. There’s hardly any mention of their acting prowess. It’s not because they don’t possess the ability to emote perfectly, but because they were never thought anything more than glamour dolls. And this phenomenon is nothing new to this industry.

From it’s inception till date, the way a woman is portrayed on screen is a far cry to our Western counterparts. Hollywood churns out female-centric stories like Lara Croft: The Tomb Raider and the Kill Bill series at regular intervals. However, in Bollywood, a female centric film means an arty genre, which only pulls critics to the theatres not crowds. From Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor to Kangana Ranaut, Priyanka Chopra, everyone fell prey to this mediocrity on the part of the industry.

Say for example, Aishwarya Rai who was equally good as Jodha in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Jodhaa Akbar, but it was Hrithik Roshan who walked away with the Best Actor trophy in almost all the award ceremonies.

The past comes calling

There were random instances of stalwarts like Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Mehboob Khan and Raj Kapoor making an exception with their brilliant presentation of women excelling as a wife, mother and beloved. Bimal Roy’s Bandini, Sujata, had women taking centre stage in the film with powerful performances by Nutan. But unfortunately, the films got tagged as art cinema, thereby alienating it from the mainstream Hindi movies.

The poetically beautiful, scintillating, and mesmerizing Madhubala too fell prey to this trend until Mughal-E-Azam came along to prove her worth as a fine actress. Not only her touch-me-not beauty enthralled the audiences, but also her superb portrayal of forlorn courtesan in love with the heir to the throne of Hindustan, Salim. Before she got immortalised by Mughal-E-Azam , she was often seen doing little to minute roles in films like Chalti Ka Naam Gaddi, Kalapani, Mr. And Mrs. 55, etc. Same goes for Nargis, who though was a quintessential element in all Raj Kapoor movies and was equally wonderful as the showman himself, remained just heroes’ love-interest. In films like Shree 420, Awaara and others, she was just Raj Kapoor’s heroine who gets him back on track when he goes astray. It took Mehboob Khan’s Mother India to bring out the actress in her and bag an Academy Award nomination.

However, there was an exception in the form of Meena Kumari who was one actress for whom roles were

tailor-made. She was the most versatile actress of all times. She could equally match up to the comic histrionics of Kishore Kumar in Shararat and also play the tragedy queen in Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam convincingly. She was not just another pretty face in tinsel-town but an actress whose expressions used to speak a 1000 words.

But other actresses like Sadhna, Nanda, Saira Banu, Sharmila Tagore, though were iconic, their presence in the films used to just add on to the glamour quotient. Even actresses like Vyajanthimala, Hema Malini and others were just dancing divas which used to eclipse their acting prowess.

The worst 90’s

This trend took a turn for the worse with the advent of 90s. It was an era of actions films and required well-built actors who could bash up 10-20 goons singlehandedly. So while actors like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan. Suniel Shetty, and other did the beating up parts, actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor were just their muses. Being confined to sing and dance routines, actresses took more interest on the way they dressed than the way they act. Even a brilliant actress Tabu did films which couldn’t prove the brilliance of this actress. She debuted in a commercial flick Prem and did many such films like Ek Chor Ek Sipahi, Vijaypath, and others, which confined her to the glam doll image. Then came the hard-hitting Astitva and Chandni Bar, which not only bagged her two National Awards each, but also an identity of a talented actress. Same goes for Madhuri Dixit (Mrityudand), Raveena Tandon (Daman) and Karisma Kapoor (Fiza, Zubeida).

However, Sridevi is one actress who not only managed to get author-backed roles in majority of her films but also excelled in it. She started her career with Solva Saawan after doing loads of south Indian films. Her second film Himmatwala was a big success and she also got recognized but she kept on getting same kind of roles and even

starred in a few. She took the most daring step to be different from the rest when she signed Sadma. Here she played the role of an amnesic girl, which won her adulations and the National Award for Best Actress alike. And the rest as they say is history. She went on into doing some of the enviable roles of all times in films like Naagin, Lamhe, Chaalbaaz, Judaai, and others.

Apart from her, no one was as lucky to go anywhere near to her. And with such movies in circulation, the female audiences always felt left out or cheated to see the state of girls being so weak and demoralizing in films. The wardrobe exhibition which the heroines took to towards the end of the 20th century made them more prone to being just a glamour doll.

The Present

In the present times, we do get to see female-centric films coming out every year. But other than Fashion, none of these films scoop up a heavy total at the box-office. They are still tagged as ‘Unconventional films’. But with a surge of new starlets, filmmakers and storytellers, the trend is somewhat moving towards the brighter side. Today films like Lajja, Chameli, Woh Lamhe, Fashion and others do hit the theatres but the frequency is too rare to get noticed. Even if they are not classified as non-commercial films, they still have a niche audience mostly girls themselves. So the reach of such films is still negligible when compared to a Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan starrer.

Ash declines to be immortalised as Barbie

aishwarya_rai_studied_23look1

Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai has declined to be immortalised as a Barbie doll, due to her professional commitments.

It was earlier reported that representatives of the 35-year-old actress were in negotiations with Barbie’s manufacturer Mattel, who planned to give the iconic doll a Bollywood face. But the deal did not take off.

Since 1994 when Aishwarya won the Miss World title, the company has made numerous attempts to make a celebrity doll modelled on the Indian beauty. However, she could never get time for their endeavour, due to her professional commitments, she said.

Yet again on the doll’s 50th anniversary, Aishwarya was approached to appear decked up as a celebrity Barbie.

“Mattel was keen to have the actress walk the ramp on Lakme Fashion Week ‘Barbie dolled up’ in a winning design as Single Likeness Barbie, which would be unveiled and auctioned for a charity of her choice,” said a statement issued by Aishwarya’s spokesperson.

However, the actress opted out due to her prior commitments as she did not want to cause inconvenience to the film-makers she was working with by taking time out for the event.

Aishwarya Rai gets a miss in most Pink Panther reviews

Pink Panther 2 which releases on February 6 has received very bad reviews from people who have seen the film at the premiere and Aishwarya hardly has a mention in the reviews.

The film has an 11% freshness rating and 3.5 on 10 score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Empire Magazine's William Thomas' verdict is 2 stars out of 5 and "A mirthless shot in the dark that misses the target by some distance." Aishwarya Rai isn't mentioned in the review at all. Owen Gleiberman of The Entertainment Weekly has given it a B- and 2 stars. There is no mention of Aishwarya Rai here too.

The Boston Phoenix calls it an "all too familiar stink," giving it 2 stars out 4
According to Boston Phoenix, the plot is razor thin and it is full of ninny nonsense. Aishwarya Rai is only mentioned as a "Bollywood Beauty."

Roger Moore of The Orlando Sentinel has given it 2 out of 5 stars, saying the movie "is somewhat less of a desecration of the memory of Peter Sellers than Martin's first outing as the bumbling French detective. Martin still hasn't bothered to learn a faux French accent. The editing doesn't hide that even the simplest stunts are now done by fellows in snow-white wigs." Aishwarya Rai is just mentioned as an "Indian."

David Germain of Bennington Banner isn't impressed with the film. Aishwarya Rai is just mentioned with other cast members. According to him, "there's a huge error behind "The Pink Panther 2" — other than the mistake of producing the sequel in the first place — it's pairing Steve Martin with John Cleese, and then failing to capitalize on their potentially explosive verbal exchanges." Harald Zwart's direction amounts to "90 minute slapstick stretches, each trying to heighten the level of Clousseau's idiocy."

It must be noted that the first film also got bad reviews but was a commercial success. The fate of this film and Ash's Hollywood innings is yet to be seen.

aishwarya1

After ‘Munnabhai’ Sanjay Dutt, it could be the turn of Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls as a Samajwadi Party candidate.
